The roll should come home

Sourish MukherjeeLTM· 31 August 2026

I shoot the film in Kolkata and then I send it away. I am studying the baths so the wait can end in this house.

I send the rolls away. That is the honest sentence. I load the camera in this city. I meter. I expose. I wind. When the cassette is full I sleeve it and I give it to a laboratory. Then I wait a week, sometimes two, for a room I cannot enter to meet the latent image before I do. I am tired of that part of the wait. Not of patience. Film is slow on purpose. A frame should not arrive like a notification. What I am tired of is the delay that is only a queue. A courier. A name on a bag. A machine in another building whose sound I will never hear. I am studying two processes now. Black and white, and C-41. Black and white is silver held in gelatine. Light writes what the eye cannot yet see. Developer turns that writing into metal. Stop ends the writing. Fixer makes it stay. Wash. Hang. A strip that will sit in a file for years if I do not scratch it. This work can happen in a tank. It can happen in a tray if the room is dark enough and my hands are steady. I have not named a developer on this page. I am still reading. I have not earned a public recipe from tests I have not finished. C-41 is colour negative. It is less kind to a wandering thermometer. The couplers wait in the emulsion. The order of the baths matters. The colour I have already shot from this house has mostly left this house, because I would rather a lab keep a roll than I cook it by two degrees. That is not a romance about craft. That is respect for a sitting I already spent. Scanning is the other half of the delay. Even when the wet work is done, the file still has to be made. I found a Fujifilm Frontier SP-3000 on eBay. It is a floor machine from the minilab years. Labs used it when a strip still had to become a print without treating the negative as a sketch. I have not installed it. I have not written as if it hums in the corner. I have found a machine that already knows film, and I am planning the space it would need. I want the chain here. Expose. Process. Scan. Keep the silver and the dye where I can reach them. I do not want to manufacture film. I want to stop outsourcing the hours after the shutter. This age is loud about newness. It forgets that a photograph begins as a physical event. Photons. Emulsion. A cassette you can drop. I am trying to live with things that had a body before they had a feed. Film is one of those things. The scanner is not a betrayal of that body. It is how I protect the original without turning the original into a look. I will make errors. The first colour I run myself will probably teach me more than a clean lab strip. I will keep the laboratory for work I cannot yet risk. I will not sell a service I have not built. This page is only the turn I am making. The roll should come home.
